Hampi - A UNESCO World Heritage Site

Duration: 7 days

Highlights: The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi was the capital of the erstwhile southern kingdom of Vijaynagar that ruled over the region from early 14th century till mid-16th century. Now a city in ruins, it was once the “second-largest medieval-era city after Beijing”. Its prosperity attracted traders and artists from far and wide. The Vijayanagara Empire was also known for its stunning architecture, vestiges of which can still be explored and observed in the ruins of Hampi. Tourists and travelers have thronged this region over the centuries to unlock the rich history, awe-inspiring art and breathtaking landscape. Here, guests can savor myths, ruins of palaces and temples, and treks to nearby hills.

Things to do in Hampi:

  • Discover centuries-old history

Virupaksha Temple: The ruins of this temple stand as a testament to wondrous architecture exhibited by the medieval architects and artisans, as well as spirituality. Dedicated to the Hindu God Lord Shiva, this temple is often visited by his devotees.

Vittala Temple: This temple complex, perhaps, is the highlight of a visit to Hampi. Comprising the iconic stone chariot, Maha Mantapa (main hall), the musical pillars of the Ranga Mantapa (tapping it to make it emit musical notes is now prohibited), it draws travelers and history lovers from around the world.

Elephant Stables: The royal elephants once called these 11 domed chambers home; it is located within the Zenana Enclosure along with the Lotus Mahal (Queen’s recreational mansion).

Each of the routes covered in the trek will offer stupendous views of the natural as well as well as man-made scenery.
  • Ride Like a Local in Tungabhadra River: Enjoy a coracle ride in River Tungabhadra, just like the natives of the erstwhile Vijayanagara Empire. These coracles are round, bowl-shaped primitive country boats made from strips of bamboo, and a ride aboard these will truly be a once in a lifetime experience.

Hyderabad is known for its rich history, culture and architecture and as a meeting point between north and south India. With a population of over 8 million, Hyderabad is India’s 6th largest metropolis. The city is known for its lakes and its pearls and so your first stop is going to be the Pearl Market, near Charminar. Here you can see ornaments made with rice pearls, silverware, saris, handcrafted items, lacquer bangles studded with stones, silk-ware and cotton-ware. Wander through the market and feel free to purchase anything that catches your eye. Produce has been traded here through the city for centuries.

Next visit Golconda Fort a ruined city and fortress west of the city of Hyderabad. The fortress was built on a granite hill and dates back to 1143. Explore the four distinct forts including the royal apartments, temples, mosques and stables. See the canons, gateways and drawbridges still lining the 10 kilometre-long (6.21 miles) outer wall. One of the most fascinating gateways is the Fateh Darwaza or Victory Gate, studded with giant iron spikes to prevent elephants from battering them down. The acoustics here are characteristic of the engineering marvels of Golconda; if someone claps their hands at a certain point below the dome, it can clearly be heard at the Bala Hisar pavilion – the highest point almost a kilometre away. This could be used as a warning to residents in case of danger.

Later, return to your hotel.
