Beyond the Splash: An Insider’s Guide to Songkran Festivities
Recently included on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity List and often referred to as the “world’s biggest water fight,” Songkran heralds the onset of the Thai New Year with joyous water battles, time-honored ceremonies and an unparalleled festive atmosphere. As this vibrant festival approaches, we share a curated collection of noteworthy experiences, bespoke indulgences and essential tips. From the electrifying streets of Bangkok to the culturally rich Chiang Mai, allow us to walk you through the essence of Songkran 2024.
1. You can celebrate Songkran in various locations
While several Southeast Asian countries, including Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos also partake in this New Year water festival festivities in mid-April, it is Thailand's celebrations that truly steal the spotlight. The allure stems from the fact that every corner of Thailand presents a distinct and unparalleled experience. In bustling Bangkok, streets like Khao San Road and Silom transform into lively battlegrounds for water wars. Alternatively, you can venture to the ancient city of Chiang Mai, where spirited water fights intertwine with deeply rooted traditions in an old city setting. For those who are into beach vibes, the sandy shores of Phuket provide the perfect backdrop for exciting festivities while you enjoy stunning coastal views. Whichever destination you choose to embrace Songkran, our team is dedicated to ensuring you arrive in style and are whisked away to your luxurious accommodation.
2. Delight your tastebuds and savor Thai gastronomy
This season provides the perfect opportunity to excite your taste buds with a plethora of Thai culinary treasures. Treat yourself to seasonal delicacies such as khao chae, a refreshing dish of rice immersed in chilled jasmine water and accompanied by an array of side dishes. For a sweet finale, satisfy your sugar cravings with the ever-popular mango sticky rice, a dessert loved by both locals and visitors alike. If you fancy something more upscale, you can always revel in gourmet dining experiences featuring exquisite Thai cuisine prepared by award-winning chefs, complemented by fine wines and spirits selected from the world's most prestigious cellars.
3. Whether soaked or stylish, dress up for the occasion
Amidst the energetic water festivities, Thai culture still places a strong emphasis on modesty. While it's true that you will likely get soaked during the massive water fights, it is important to adhere to cultural norms. Opt for clothing that covers your shoulders and avoid skimpy tops and bottoms — bikinis are not considered appropriate street attire for this celebration. Instead, you may wear your bathing suit underneath lightweight clothing for comfort. Additionally, make sure your clothing isn't see-through when wet. For practicality and to blend in with locals, T-shirts and shorts are ideal attire. If you plan to visit temples or take part in traditional rituals, remember to dress respectfully with knees and shoulders covered. Going for flip-flops over sneakers will keep your feet comfortable all throughout the activities.
4. Engage in immersive experiences and discover hidden gems
Dive into the heart of the action as locals and visitors partake in friendly water battles, symbolizing the cleansing of the past year's misfortunes and welcoming the new year with fresh beginnings. Explore traditional Songkran ceremonies at temples and shrines, where offerings are made, blessings are received, and rituals are performed to honor ancestors and seek prosperity for the year ahead. You may also venture off the beaten path and discover hidden gems tucked in the alleyways and neighborhoods of Thailand's cities and towns. Explore local markets teeming with vibrant colors and exotic scents, where you can sample street food delicacies and shop for unique souvenirs. Engage with friendly locals, learn traditional crafts and be fully immersed in Thailand’s rich culture.
5. Make a splash, be safe and have fun
As you get ready to soak in the whirlpool of Songkran festivities, it's essential to properly equip yourself to navigate all the chaos with ease. Dress appropriately in quick-drying clothing and waterproof footwear to stay comfortable throughout the water fights. Safekeep your belongings by storing them in waterproof bags or pouches. Consider protecting yourself from the sun with a floppy hat and sunscreen, and don't forget to arm yourself with a water gun, bucket, or bowl. Lastly, stay hydrated and embrace the spirit of Songkran with an open heart and a joyful spirit.

Where Tradition Meets Luxury: Conversations with Rayavadee's Chumpol Chantaloon
We sat down with Rayavadee’s General Manager, Chumpol Chantaloon to talk about the resort's humble beginnings rooted in local Thai traditions to its evolution into an image of sophistication and sustainability in Krabi. Discover the inspirations that have shaped Rayavadee through the eyes of its visionary leader of 12 years.
Q: What makes Rayavadee extra special compared to other properties?
A: Rayavadee stands out for its profound appreciation of the natural environment, seamlessly integrated with the unique design of its pavilion rooms interspersed with a variety of native plants. The rooms are designed to fit in with the original coconut plantation, which has a checkerboard-like planting pattern arranged in an orderly and harmonious manner. Being close to nature also benefits us from being able to live together with local wildlife such as spectacled langurs, macaques and hornbills. Another outstanding feature is the location of the hotel. It has an area covering three beaches — Nam Mao Beach, Phra Nang Beach and Railay Beach. In addition, our area at the end of Laem Phra Nang Beach is perfectly flanked by stalagmites and stalactites.
Q: What distinctive services and amenities does Rayavadee offer?
A: We have implemented excellent service program by our “Tonhong Team.” Tonhong is a Thai tradition which means a trusted personal assistant whose responsibility is to serve the royal family; or a trusted servant who has the keys to the rooms and the treasure or a servant of the King. Similarly, Rayavadee’s Tonhong is a trusted individual that takes exclusive care of Rayavadee’s guests. The Tonhong is prompt, courteous, organized, well groomed, honest, trustworthy, friendly but not familiar, reliable, low-key and a professional committed to the highest standards of service, striving to create unprecedented service experiences.
Q: When is the best time to visit your resort?
A: Krabi is blessed with a warm and pleasant climate, with the air and sea temperature usually hovering around a perfect 28°C (82.4°F) all year round. From November through April, the weather is usually dry and cool, while from May to October, you can expect more frequent rain showers that color the jungle and surrounding mountains with a lovely palette of green.
Q: Could you provide insights into the values and culture that define Rayavadee?
A: As a team, we work towards the same goal with mutual respect, trust and care to create a true sense of place through our unique Rayavadee charm, Thai hospitality and love for the environment. We are committed to always providing our guests with genuine personalized experiences and offering the highest level of service excellence by improving ourselves every day.
Q: What is Rayavadee’s design ethos?
A: The resort’s structures draw inspiration from local design precepts in an organic relationship with the surroundings. Our two-story design was inspired by traditional Thai architecture of Southern Thailand. The first level of the pavilion, consisting of a living space and a pantry, is linked by a wooden spiral staircase to a sumptuous bedroom with an attached bathroom. The external wall finishes are wood substitution panels made of composite fiberglass and cement materials in a warm yellow color. Industrialized wood products have been extensively used to conserve endangered hardwoods. The roof-form evokes associations with oriental structures in subtle ways. At night, the lighting around the meandering footpaths and the silhouette of the buildings’ forms are reminiscent of a tropical garden.
Q: What culinary delights await your guests?
A: At Rayavadee, we take pride in our diverse culinary offerings, presented through four distinct restaurants: Raya Dining, Krua Phranang, Raitalay Terrace and The Grotto. We strive to provide our guests with the highest quality and safest ingredients, focusing on organic, locally sourced products, aiming to give back to society by supporting fair trade products, social enterprises and charity programs. Our menus are thoughtfully curated to offer an array of healthy and balanced options, featuring nutritious organic vegetables, herbs and salads, providing our guests with a culinary journey that delights the senses and nourishes the body.
Q: How would you characterize your spa and wellness offerings?
A: The Rayavadee Spa’s extensive range of the therapies draw on ancient Thai healing traditions and philosophy of well-being that combines body, mind and spirit to create treatments that impart a deeply felt sense of relaxation in luxurious, private surroundings. Whether you’re indulging in a relaxing holiday retreat, a romantic getaway or planning some pre-wedding pampering, our spa packages offer one of the best ways to leave all your worries and stress far behind.
Q: How does the resort implement sustainability practices and engage with the local community?
A: Our internal Sustainable Management Team is committed to driving the environmental and social activities of Rayavadee with the Railay community to achieve sustainability, in accordance with our company’s core values. We have various initiatives such as the “Railay Model: Together, we will keep our Railay beautiful,” which was established in collaboration with various stakeholders from public and private sectors. No matter what we do, we always take our natural resources into the equation. By referring to “we,” it includes everyone and everything in Railay -- the locals, resorts, hotels, restaurants, and other entrepreneurs in the area. Everyone works hand in hand to preserve the unique environment so that the later generations and nature lovers can also appreciate it just like we do. We also hold classes in a dedicated classroom at the accommodation and support local schools with water filter devices as part of our Water for All programs.
