Raptor Refuge, Tasmania

Donations from A&K clients have made it possible for the largest flight aviary in the southern hemisphere to be installed at the Raptor Refuge. 

Raptor Refuge is a not-for-profit organisation established in 1997 by Craig Webb on a 20-acre property outside of Hobart. This inspiring refuge reflects a committed dedication to caring and protecting Tasmania's natural wildlife, rehabilitating injured birds and releasing them back into the wild. The proximity of the refuge to the birds' natural habitat is a great advantage to rehabilitation. The facility has three of the largest raptor flight aviaries in the Southern Hemisphere, purpose-built to flight train wedge-tailed eagles, sea-eagles and other birds during their recovery from injury.

Exclusive to Abercrombie Kent, your visit to Tasmania's Raptor Refuge will provide a level of access beyond anything that is offered to any other visitors. Additional to touring the aviaries and tactile displays, you are invited into the bird care and exercise areas for an intimate view into the care and keeping of the bird patients at Raptor Refuge. This will include an introduction to the individual patients and personal encounters with birds in various stages of recovery. You will have the opportunity to observe the procedures that take place behind the scenes. This might include beak trims, eagle weighing, or any of the other interesting husbandry techniques that allow Raptor Refuge to take the very best care of their patients for the duration of their recovery, and to adequately prepare them for their release back into the wild.

 Your visit also includes the chance to watch the Peregrine Falcon, reportedly the fastest animal in the world, whizzing around the flight tunnel, as well as the chance to see wedge-tailed eagles flying in Australia's largest flight aviary. You will leave with a greater understanding of the wild beauty and strength that these animals possess, as well as an appreciation of how Raptor Refuge manage these creatures, from the grass-roots organising of bird rescues, to the more complex level of long term planning and wildlife policy.

Meet our new Travel Specialist – Centaine Treasurer

My passion for travel comes from a life-long obsession with wanting to go to the places I have seen in movies. From an early age, I have always wanted to see where Indiana Jones went and visit cities with unusual names like ‘The Big Apple’ (realising there was not one large apple in New York like there is in Australia with our many ‘big’ attractions). So, studying travel and tourism always made sense for me. My Bachelor of Tourism has provided me with multiple opportunities to work in the United States; for the Walt Disney Company and most recently, for National Geographic Expeditions. Having most of my work experience in tourism has meant I have been able to travel to China, domestically within the US and in France. I look forward to expanding my world knowledge and finally seeing more of those movie locations! Closer to home, I can’t wait to explore Australia’s Red Centre and New Zealand’s South Island.

Murray River Walk, South Australia

Three Capes Signature Walk, Tasmania

Experience the sheer exhilaration of walking on the edge of the world. The moderately paced Three Capes Signature Walk is a fully guided, four-day group adventure along Tasmania’s dramatic Tasman Peninsula with the wild Southern Ocean as your constant companion. Scenic Rim Trail, Queensland

The four-day, fully guided Scenic Rim Trail, is an extraordinary bucket list hike for Australians and internationals alike — but you’ll want to be an experienced bushwalker to tackle it.

The adventure starts in the rugged and remote mountains of Southeast Queensland’s Main Range National Park, located just one and a half hours from Brisbane. An Interview with A&K's Kristy-Ann Berry

We interviewed Kristy-Ann about the highlights of her career, her top travel tips, and bucket-list destinations for 2024.

What's the best thing about your job?

Building relationships with clients and creating memorable travel experiences for them.

What destination in Australia or New Zealand surprised you the most once you got there?

New Zealand. Before working in the travel industry, I had no desire to visit the country but when I first joined A&K, the Central Otago region of New Zealand was one of my very first ‘educationals’ and the stunning scenery and landscape just blew me away.

What's the most memorable experience you've put together for clients?

The most memorable experience I’ve put together was for the guests on our private jet journey: Around the World with Geoffrey Kent (our Founder). The Apple Isle was the only Australian stop on this epic journey in 2017.

The challenge was to develop a program that was unique, had many WOW moments and ‘seemed’ logistically impossible to deliver. I had an ‘idea’ for an experience, and I knew it would require product innovation at its best, and I was determined to make it work. After many, many months of preparation, negotiation and speaking with government stakeholders I indeed delivered a miracle.

You may have heard of the Salamanca Market in Hobart, Tasmania? It’s one of the most vibrant and loved outdoor markets in Australia. However, you probably haven’t heard of Lagoon Bay, a very remote beach in southeast Tasmania, quite literally in the middle of nowhere.

When our very special guests landed, we managed to bring the whole Salamanca Market to the beach and to the very location of our guests, a wandering showcase of local Tasmanian handmade gifts and produce. All the market infrastructure (from marquees to port-a-loos to food and waitstaff) were flown in; we even went to the extent of filling in the wombat holes on the runway so we could land the planes!

To put this into perspective there were six planes flying clockwise towards Freycinet over Wineglass Bay and Maria Island and nine helicopters flying anti clockwise towards the Tasman Peninsula, flying over Port Arthur, Tasman Island and the Three Capes. Yep, 15 planes were involved in organising the operation. All had to be perfectly timed to arrive at Lagoon Bay within 10 minutes of one another.

When I heard a guest chatting with Geoffrey Kent at Lagoon Bay and she made the comment ‘only a company like A&K could do something as magical as this. How do they do it Geoffrey?’ He replied with one word ‘PLANNING!!!!’

Operation Salamanca was deemed the largest logistical movement that Tasmania has ever seen, noted in Premier Mr Will Hodgman’s welcome speech at the Museum of Old & New Art (MONA) to our group of lucky guests. Afterwards, Hobart was rated internationally as one of the best destinations to visit alongside Everest and is still a career highlight for me.

What's on your bucket list for Australia & New Zealand, somewhere you are yet to visit? 

The quirky underground town of Coober Pedy in South Australia, and Mount Mulligan in Queensland’s Outback.

If you could tell clients one thing before booking a trip to Australia or New Zealand, what would it be?

Seasonal Variations: The seasons in Australia and New Zealand are opposite to those in the Northern Hemisphere. Make sure to plan your trip according to the season you prefer and the activities you want to experience.

Travel Requirements: Check visa requirements, travel restrictions and health recommendations before booking your trip. Make sure you have the necessary documents and vaccinations for a smooth travel experience.

Any new trends that you're excited about in the region?

Luxury travellers in Australia and New Zealand are becoming increasingly more adventurous, seeking out-of-the-box experiences.

Update from Southern Ocean Lodge

More than three years after Baillie Lodges’ award-winning flagship property Southern Ocean Lodge was razed in the Kangaroo Island (KI) bushfires, the rebuild of the globally celebrated luxury lodge has commenced. Dubbed ‘SOL 2.0’, the new-look Southern Ocean Lodge is scheduled to be open on the 6th of December.

SOL 2.0 will largely maintain the original lodge footprint with 25 luxurious guest suites easing along the coastline. In a deft design manoeuvre, each of the suites has been reoriented to offer even better views of the ocean and coastal wilderness, where the eye was always drawn to the glorious sunrise, sea mists and thundering cobalt waves breaking on the shore.

A new ultra-premium suite, the 640m2 Ocean Pavilion which follows the ‘owner’s residence’ style pavilions across the Baillie Lodges portfolio, sits remotely offering expansive views of the Southern Ocean, outdoor terrace with wet-edge pool and private accommodation with up to four bedrooms and bathrooms, or a combination of two separate suites.

The Osprey, Remarkable and Flinders suites will be reinstated with upgrades and layout tweaks to make the most of the coastal outlook.

The rebuild of SOL 2.0 will see the return of the lodge’s original architect Max Pritchard along with his partner Andrew Gunner. The new lodge will once again be a champion of South Australian and KI suppliers of food and beverages, where a commitment to using exclusively local produce is a veritable boon to the regional economy.

Where the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef meet, explore Kuku Yalanji land escorted by a local Kuku Yalanji guide, sharing the connection they have to Country. Indigenous Art & Culture

On Country in Litchfield

Take the road less travelled from Darwin to Litchfield National Park, learning the real story of this land from First Nations guides. Visit several scenic and culturally significant locations including Florence Falls, where you can swim in the clear natural pools. Learn about how bush resources are used and enjoy an exclusive visit to private land at Woolaning Spring.
