Day 6 - Brussels Sightseeing Tour

Brussels continues to thrive as a fascinating city that deserves to be properly explored. With a medieval old town and the modern buildings of the EU administrative headquarters, the capital of Belgium is sure to intrigue. Start off with a visit to the Grand Place, the magnificent square at the heart of the old quarter. This is considered to be one of Europe’s most ornate market squares and it is easy to see why, with the opulent guildhalls and Breadhouse towering above. Close by is Brussels’ most famous resident, the Manneken Pis, a bronze statue of a small boy ‘watering’ a fountain. The statue remains an emblem of the rebellious nature of the city.

This afternoon is at leisure.

Day 7 - Brussels - Waterloo - Bruges

First head out this morning to the edge of the city, where you find the unique structure of the Atomium, from which you enjoy spectacular views back across the capital. In contrast to the modern design of this building, if you venture even further from the city you also travel back in time. The famous battlefield of Waterloo lies in the countryside nearby and you have the opportunity to visit the battlefield where Napoleon was finally defeated by a coalition of British, Dutch and German troops, a plain which is now dotted with monuments. The Visitor Centre offers an audio-visual presentation of the progress of the battle, giving an insight to the strategy and brutality with which it was fought. Check out the Panorama Museum too, which features a vast, circular painting of the battle, executed with amazing perspective and realism, before your transfer to Bruges for check-in.

Overnight: Dukes' Palace

Day 8 - Bruges Sightseeing Tour

In the High Middle Ages, the city of Bruges was one of the richest ports in Europe, owing its vast wealth to the maritime cloth trade. However, with the silting of the seas, the city lapsed into a beautiful slumber, with its canals, cobbled streets, merchants’ houses, churches and museums all perfectly preserved as one of the most magical cities in modern times. Your guide takes you for a stroll along the tree-lined canal streets, passing the Church of the Holy Blood, the Markt and its soaring belfry, one of the tallest and most beautiful in the whole of the Flanders region. Visit the medieval city hall and the Church of Our Lady, home to Michelangelo’s superb marble sculpture of the Virgin and Child. Stop at the Groeninge museum, which offers a varied overview of the history of Belgian visual art, including world-renowned Flemish primitives as well as 18th and 19th-century neoclassical pieces.

This afternoon is at leisure. You may like to take a short boat trip or give into temptation in one of the town’s many chocolate shops.

Overnight: Dukes' Palace

Meal Plan: B

Day 9 - Ypres

During World War One Belgium was host to a number of violent major battles. Many of the prominent battles in the early months of the war were held around the town of Ypres in the Western Flanders region. Though the town itself was more or less wiped off the face of the earth, it has since been magnificently reconstructed. Explore the town centre and find the Market Square with its iconic Cloth Hall, originally one of the largest commercial buildings in the Middle Ages, before it was destroyed in the war and later rebuilt in the same style. Here you can make your way around the inter-active museum ‘In Flanders Fields’ to learn more about the events of 1914-1918, before heading on to the Menin Gate. One of the most moving memorials in the area, this monument is inscribed with the names of thousands of soldier lost to the war and a memorial service still takes place here every evening. Before transferring back to your hotel in Brussels, you visit some of the remaining trenches and cemeteries around Ypres, and get a more informed understanding of the scale of the devastation that unfolded.
