Day 1 - Arrive Budapest

Upon arrival at Budapest airport you are welcomed to Hungary in the arrivals hall by your local Guardian Angel and transferred to your hotel, where you are assisted with check-in procedures.

Day 2 - Buda & Pest Tours

The historic city of Budapest is divided into two by the magnificent Danube river. Explore both sides today with your local guide, beginning in Pest with a visit to the palatial Opera House, built between 1875 and 1884, and painstakingly restored after being severely damaged during the siege of the city in 1944-5. Proceed on to the ornate synagogue, the largest in Europe, and discover the adjoining Jewish Museum, which stands at the exact location where Theodor Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, was born. Time permitting, pay a visit to the vast Heroes' Square with its impressive Millennial Monument and St Stephen's Basilica, the city's largest church. Afterwards, explore one of the largest parliamentary buildings in the world, the Hungarian Parliament, with its magnificent interior and fascinating history. Complete your morning with a visit the market hall, where you can discover the wonderful array of provisions and craft wares on sale.

After lunch at leisure, cross over the Danube into Buda and up Castle Hill, where the former Royal Palace gracefully towers over the river. Explore the cobbled and colourful streets of this ancient royal district and visit Matthias Church, which has witnessed the coronations of Hungarian kings over the centuries. Round off your day by enjoying the stunning panoramas of the city and river from the Fishermen's Bastion next to the church.

Day 3 - Danube Valley

Leave the city for the day and travel to the picturesque Danube Bend region, the centre of culture during the Hungarian Renaissance. Visit the wonderfully preserved town of Szentendre, a flourishing artists’ community with a profusion of cobbled streets, church spires and colourful Baroque houses. Time permitting, you might wish to visit the Margit Kovács Museum, which displays many of the artist's finest pieces, from ceramic works to life-size sculptures, and the 18th-century Annunciation Church, a red Rococo masterpiece built by the Orthodox community and representative of the large Serbian influence on the town.

Afterwards, continue to Visegrád, the royal seat in medieval times, which features an imposing set of fortifications and the partially restored palace of the Angevin kings. The hilltop citadel is well worth a visit before you proceed on to Esztergom. Your final stop of the day is also the seat of the Hungarian Catholic Church, and you make a visit to the basilica and crypt to round off the journey.

Day 4 - Godollo & Holloko

Travel into the attractive Hungarian countryside with your local guide to visit the Royal Palace of Gödöllö. Originally the residence of the noble Grassalkovich family, the palace later became the summer residence of Hungary's Queen Elisabeth (commonly known as Sisi) and is one of the world's largest Baroque castles. Having served as a Soviet army base during the Communist era, it has since been transformed back to its original glory. Admire the ornate decorations and impressive Grand Hall to see how the imperial family lived in the 19th century, before you continue to Hollókõ. This village features dozens of Hungarian houses that are considered historic monuments and have earned the surrounding area UNESCO World Heritage status. The handmade wooden buildings here cluster around the ruins of a 13th-century castle to provide an authentic snapshot of the rural past

Day 5 - Lake Balaton

Head out of the city and into the countryside on today’s excursion to the beautiful area around Lake Balaton, Central Europe’s largest freshwater lake. Stop en-route in Veszprem, the city of queens, for an hour-long walking tour on Castle Hill. Witness Heroes' Gate at the entrance of the castle, as well as the Fire Tower, the iconic symbol of the town, with its two levels split into a medieval lower and Baroque upper section. Admire the view of the town and surrounding area below from the balcony here.

Afterwards proceed on to Tihany, a charming town with twisting and narrow cobblestone streets, and visit its Benedictine Abbey. Here you have the opportunity to sample some wines in one of the local cellars dotted around the hill, before your return to Budapest

Day 6 - Eger & Tokaj

Enjoy an excursion east to the pretty wine regions of Eger and Tokaj. First stop in the Baroque city of Eger for a walking tour on the cobblestone streets. The famous Siege of Eger, an emblem of national defence and patriotic heroism in Hungary, occurred here in the 16th century, when the town successfully defended itself against the forces of the Ottoman Empire. Explore the history of the hilltop fortress and perhaps get to see one of its original dungeons.

Continue further east towards the enchanting Tokaj region. Here you have the opportunity to explore the village of the same name, with its lovely Baroque Catholic Church. You may like to visit a private wine cellar to sample the famous Aszu or take a short drive to the TV Tower to admire the panoramic view. Alternatively, you may prefer to visit the synagogue in the nearby village of Mád to see its stunning interior.

Day 7 - Szeged

Travel a couple of hours south to Szeged, known as the city of sunshine. Completely rebuilt after a disastrous flood in 1879, Szeged boasts grand 19th-century architecture and broad ring boulevards. The heart of the city is Szechenyi Square, lined with old trees and imposing buildings, including the eclectic work of the Art Nouveau architect Odon Lechner at the Neo-Baroque Town Hall. Witness the beautifully-restored Klauzal Square and walk along Karasz Street, the main pedestrian area of the city, teeming with cafés. You make your way past the main university building and visit the splendid Votive Church, one of the largest in Hungary, which forms the backdrop to the Szeged Open Air Festival, taking place each summer. Stroll along the banks of the River Tisza, admiring the beautiful fountain in front of the Mora Ferenc Museum on the way. You might wish to enjoy lunch at leisure in one of the famous fish restaurants.

Afterwards, continue on to discover the finest Art Nouveau building in town, the Palais Reök, which combines the superior elements of the French and Hungarian movements with a captivating elegance. Before your return to Budapest, make sure to pay a visit to the monumental Great Synagogue with its impressive dome and interior.

Day 8 - Budapest - Vienna

Meet your guide and driver this morning at your hotel and transfer by private vehicle to the Austrian capital of Vienna. Before entering Austria enjoy a stop (2 hours) at Pannonhalma, where your guide accompanies you on a tour of the 1000-year-old Benedictine Abbey, which is still inhabited by monks to this day. 

Upon arrival at your hotel in Vienna, you are met by local representative and assisted with check-in.

Day 9 - Vienna Walking Tour

Explore the imperial delights of Vienna today during a half-day walking tour. Begin with a visit to the splendid Hofburg Palace complex, the famous winter residence of the Habsburg family who ruled the Austro-Hungarian Empire until 1918. In the oldest part of the palace, take in the extraordinary collection of Austrian Crown Jewels, worn by the Emperors on the occasion of their coronation. The 15th-century Burgundian Treasury and impressive Treasury of the Order of the Golden Fleece are just a couple of the highlights also on display here. Afterwards, wander through the charming streets and hidden alleyways of the old town until you reach the gothic St Stephen's Cathedral, whose soaring structure enshrines the heart of Vienna.

Day 10 - Schönbrunn Palace & Vienna Woods

Venture away from the city centre today for an excursion to the magnificent Schönbrunn Palace with its glorious grounds. En route witness the exterior of the curious Hundertwasser House, an architecturally-fascinating building designed by the artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. You then pass Prater Park with its giant ferris wheel, before reaching Schönbrunn Palace itself, the vast summer residence of the Habsburgs, which takes its name from a beautiful spring found on the estate. The spectacular setting of the Palace and Gardens is a prime example of Baroque planning, comprising strict architectural symmetry further enhanced by its gardens with fountains, trees and alleyways. Your guide leads you through a selection of the palace staterooms of Empress Maria Theresa, the only female ruler to ever sit on the throne and rule the Austrian Empire. Learn what life may have been like for her daughter, Marie Antoinette, who spent much of her childhood here.

Start this afternoon with a lovely scenic drive through Vienna Woods, gaining a beautiful view over the city below. As you emerge from the woods, the picturesque town of Klosterneuburg comes into sight. Steeped in history and culture, Klosterneuburg was the site of one of the most important Roman fortresses of the time, which later became the location of the monastery, founded in 1133 under the Babenberg ruler Leopold III. Visit the medieval cloisters of the Augustinian abbey that dominates the town, with its treasured 'Verdun Altar'. This splendid example of Augustinian architecture is also the largest private wine producer in Austria. Enjoy a private tour of its Baroque wine cellar, ending with a tasting. At the end of your tour, join your driver who  transfers you back to your hotel in Vienna.

Day 11 - Bratislava

On your full-day excursion today, discover the intriguing city of Bratislava, located on the banks of the Danube just an hour’s drive downstream from Vienna. Formerly the capital of the Hungarian Kingdom and venue of coronations of the Habsburgs, this historic city, unscathed by wars, has preserved its Old World charm. Today, the thriving capital of Slovakia has blossomed into the quintessential central European city. While Bratislava has undoubtedly grown up, it is still small enough to be intimate and quaint without being overrun with tourists.

Considered a hidden gem by many, here you really can enjoy an authentic European lifestyle. The atmospheric cafés in the lively Old Town combined with charming architectural delights and the city’s youthful ambiance, makes for a great blend. The highlights of your visit include the Primate’s Palace with a splendid collection of 17th-century royal tapestries, St Martin’s Cathedral, which saw 19 Habsburg coronations, and, the unique Old Town Hall – now the City Museum –a complex of buildings dating from the 14th century. Enjoy lunch at leisure before returning in your luxury private vehicle back to Vienna.

Day 12 - Vienna - Salzburg

Today you are met at your hotel and privately transferred with your Guardian Angel to Vienna railway station to begin your Concierge Rail journey. You are shown to your pre-reserved 1st-class seating and your luggage is handled on board for you.

Day 13 - Salzburg Walking Tour

Take in the highlights of the city of Mozart during your walking tour. Accompanied by your knowledgeable guide, stroll along the inviting Getreidegasse, probably Salzburg's most famous shopping street. Here you see Mozart’s birthplace; known as the ‘Hagenauer House’, Mozart lived at no.9 Getreidegasse from 1756 until 1773. Continue to Herbert-von-Karajan-Platz, named after one of Salzburg's greatest musical sons, the legendary conductor and music director of the Salzburg Festival for many decades.

Next it’s time for a refreshment stop at one of the many local coffeehouses that were once part of the aristocratic imperial era, during which this unique café culture flourished and attracted artists, poets and writers from across the globe. Later, stroll along to Peter's Abbey to see its lavish Rococo interior before finishing your tour at the Mirabell Palace and Gardens, best known for being part of the background in 'The Sound of Music'.

The Augustiner Brewery at Mülln in Salzburg was founded by Augustinian monks in 1621 who had been called to Salzburg from Bavaria by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Wolf Dietrich. A monastery was built for the Augustinians in Mülln on the northern slopes of the Mönchsberg hill between 1607 and 1614. When the Augustinians died out in Salzburg in the 19th century, Emperor Ferdinand the Kind handed over the monastery to the Benedictines from Michaelbeuern. Even today, considerable value is attached to maintaining the brewing tradition, such as the trademark of serving beer from a wooden barrel in stone mugs. Enjoy a guided tour by their brewer behind the scenes of a 'living brewery museum'.

Day 14 - Schloss Hellbrunn

Journeying outside Salzburg, enjoy a half-day sightseeing tour to Schloss Hellbrunn and Leopoldskron. Schloss Hellbrunn, built between 1612 and 1615, is one of the most beautiful examples of Manneristic architecture north of the Alps and unique through Europe.  Enjoy the spacious park, aquatic gardens with trick fountains, the mechanical theatre and the 'Sound of Music' pavilion. Returning to Salzburg, enjoy a lovely view of Schloss Leopoldskron, whose façade facing the lake represented the von Trapp family home in 'The Sound of Music'.

Day 15 - Salzkammergut & Lake Hallstatt

Discover the very heart of the beautiful Salzkammergut lake district with your driver-guide today. Arrive at the town of Bad Ischl, known for its fine pastry, and visit the yellow Kaiservilla, so coloured as a sign of the wealth and power of Emperor Franz Josef, who spent so many summers here.

Continue south alongside the scenic Lake Hallstatt to the lakeside village of Hallstatt, believed to be the oldest community in Austria.  More than a thousand graves of prehistoric men have been found here, and some exhibits may be seen in the Prehistoric Museum. Salt has been mined here for more than 2,800 years and a visit to the Hallstatt salt mines, the oldest in the world, is not to be missed; enjoy the treats of a cable car ride up to the mines, an underground train, wooden chutes and a subterranean lake.

Day 16 - Berchtesgaden & Lake Konigsee

Enjoy Alpine splendour today on a half-day excursion with your expert guide. Cross the German border to visit the picturesque Bavarian alpine town of Berchtesgaden and the nearby Lake Königsee, Germany's highest lake which resembles a Norwegian fjord - in beauty and water quality alike. Day 17 - Salzburg - Herrenchiemsee - Munich

Leave Salzburg behind this morning with your private driver-guide and transfer to Munich. Head into the mountainous Chiemgau Alps region in the south-eastern corner of Germany. Here you discover Chiemsee, a freshwater lake originally hollowed out by a glacier and colloquially known as the Bavarian Sea. The lake has two well-known islands, the 'Herreninsel' (gentleman's island) and 'Fraueninsel' (lady's island). First, take a boat to the gentleman's island and visit the Herrenchiemsee Palace, built by Kind Ludwig II in 1878. The palace was never completed but was meant to be a replica of the Palace of Versailles. Marvel at the ornate gardens and fountains, the evocative setting and the sumptuous interior.

Time permitting, visit the fascinating King Ludwig II museum accommodated in the Herrenchiemsee Palace complex. Continue to the lady's island, which is famous for its marzipan and the 'Klosterlikör' (cloister liquor). Continue your journey to Munich. Day 18 - Munich City Tour

Known by the locals as the ‘village of a million people’, the best way to get to know Munich and its compact historic centre is on foot. Your expert guide escorts you through the pedestrianised streets, taking in the multitude of fantastic shops, markets and busy beer halls, such as the famous Hofbrauhaus. Right in the heart of the city is the Marienplatz, a large open square where you find the Old and the New Town Halls (Rathaus). The latter is a magnificent Neo-Gothic building that features the famous Glockenspiel, a chiming clock that re-enacts two stories from Munich’s history with life-sized characters. Nearby, the Frauenkirche, Munich's Gothic cathedral, features twin towers topped with domes rather than spires, and has become an iconic emblem of the city.

Day 19 - Romantic Road

The Romantic Road meanders through some of the prettiest historic towns in southern Germany. Today your driver-guide takes you to medieval Rothenburg ob der Tauber, once known as the 'Free Imperial City' and arguably the most charming of these towns. Admire the delightful half-timbered architecture of the fairy tale town and witness the impressive façade of the town hall as you explore the scenery with your local guide. Make sure to pay a visit to the 14th-century Church of St James, featuring the intricately carved Altar of the Holy Blood and a pair of Gothic spires that dominate the town’s skyline.

Take some time to have a leisurely stroll round the historic town centre here, adorned by numerous fountains, towers and turrets. You can choose to spend some more free time in Rothenburg (it also boasts a chilling Medieval Criminal Museum that is not for the fainthearted), or return to Munich along the scenic route via Dinkelsbuhl, Nordlingen and Donauworth, taking in some more of the Romantic Road with some stops as time permits

Day 20 - Munich - Prague

Meet your driver and Guardian Angel for the private transfer to Munich train station, from where you take the train to Prague. You are reserved in 1st-class seating and your luggage is handled on board for you.

Day 21 - Prague Old Town & Lesser Town Tour

Explore the architectural gems of Prague’s UNESCO-listed Old Town as you wander along its charming cobbled streets with your expert guide. Marvel at the Gothic Town Hall in the Old Town Square, where, subject to weather conditions, you may wish to climb the staircase, or ride an elevator to the top, to experience amazing views over the city and square below. After descending the tower, learn the history of its iconic astronomical clock below and join the crowds to watch its hourly display – the procession of the twelve apostles. At the end of your tour, partake in Prague’s favourite activity – crossing the elegant 14th-century Charles Bridge in order to enjoy the panoramic views and see the famous Baroque statues up close.

Located between the Charles Bridge and Prague Castle, the intriguing Lesser Town (Mala Strana) is one of Prague’s most historical and oldest districts. Stroll through the narrow streets of this charming quarter, also known as the Pearl of Baroque Architecture, where your guide introduces you to its history, which dates back much further than this period. Explore the district’s most extensive and unforgettable building – the Albrecht von Wallenstein’s Palace with its five courtyards and a garden landscaped in the design of a French park. Don’t miss the Church of St Nicholas, the most famous Baroque church in the city, boasting stunning interiors and intricate craftsmanship in every corner. Complete your tour with a stroll around the nearby Vrtba’s Gardens.

Day 22 - Prague Castle District

Delve into the history surrounding Prague's Castle District, known as Hradcany. Begin by visiting the imposing Castle itself. Dating from the ninth century and originally the seat of Bohemian kings and Holy Roman emperors, today it is the official residence of the President of the Czech Republic. Continue exploring Hradcany with a visit to the Cathedral of St Vitus, one of the finest and most richly endowed in Central Europe, and the Basilica of St George, which was founded in 905. Following this, take a stroll along Golden Lane, a row of tiny colourful cottages dating from the 16th century that were later used by goldsmiths. Complete your tour with a visit to the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Loreto (time permitting) and the Strahov Monastery, with its glorious Baroque decorations, where you take a private tour of its ornate library.

Explore the charming Troja district, situated in a popular beauty-spot on the right bank of the river Vltava. Absorb the heritage of elegant Troja Palace, the 16th-century summer residence of the Counts of Sternberg. Set amidst formal gardens with a hedge labyrinth, this arresting russet-red and white palace is equally as impressive inside. Marvel at the ornate frescoes in the Grand Emperor’s Hall.

Day 23 - Kutna Hora

Journey outside of Prague today to the charming little town of Kutna Hora. Found to be sitting on rich deposits of silver in the 13th century, the town became very wealthy, eventually making King Wenceslas the richest ruler in Central Europe. Check out the Italian Court and Mint, once the royal residence, as well as the Church of St Barbara, a UNESCO World Heritage site whose three huge tent-like spires dominate the town. Before returning to Prague, you discover Sedlec Ossuary, a small church decorated in an extraordinary manner with the bones of 40,000 people.

Day 24 - Terezin & Nelahozeves

First stop today is the town of Terezin, where the former Nazi Theresienstadt Concentration Camp is located. See the camp, a prison for 150,000 Jews during World War II, as the Nazis left it in 1944. The Lesser Fortress, with its tiny cells, served as the prison of the Prague Gestapo, and the Ghetto Museum details the town's tragic story.

After your excursion travel back to Prague, via Nelahozeves. The Czech Republic's greatest composer, Anton Dvorak, was born in the village of Nelahozeves. Visit his birthplace and memorial museum located in a small house in the village. Also visit the Renaissance Chateau, once a residence of powerful nobility, which now houses a permanent exhibition entitled Private Spaces. The artefacts presented span five centuries and include some of the most precious objects in the collection, reflecting how an ancient and influential noble family lived in a countryside chateau, including hundreds of pieces displayed for the first time.

Day 25 - Karlovy Vary

Journey towards Germany this morning to the western border area of the Czech Republic, where the charming spa town of Karlovy Vary is located. The town (known as Karlsbad, in German) is a medium-sized, district town best known as a spa destination, although it is of major importance in the artistic glass and china industries as well. Its recognition as a spa town began in the 14th century and it received its first major influx of international guests in the 17th century. Explore the spa buildings and the grounds, which include geysers and thermal springs, and see the Baroque sculptures commemorating the great and near great who have visited over several hundred years. Your tour includes a visit to the Moser Glass Museum and glass works where you can witness the local glass makers crafting wonderful pieces of art. The museum was established in 1857 by Ludwig Moser and offers an exhibition of the 150-year-old glass works history.

Day 26 - Cesky Krumlov

Venture into the Czech countryside and head some distance south of Prague until you reach Cesky Krumlov, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Considered one of the prettiest towns in Bohemia, it is bisected by the River Vltava. As you stroll through the cobbled Old Town, you are sure to be charmed by the stunning Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. The highlight of your day is a public guided tour of the striking 13th-century Krumlov Castle. Revel in its sumptuous interiors, delightful formal gardens and stunning Baroque theatre. Afterwards, continue to the only local brewery in Cesky Krumlov, where you enjoy a private tour followed by a tasting of this refreshing South Bohemian beer prior to your journey back to Prague.

Day 27 - Prague Galleries & Museums

Immerse yourselves in Prague's finest art galleries and museums with your expert guide. Highlights of your excursion today include the National Gallery’s collection at Sternberg Palace. Marvel at its mesmerising displays of European art dating from antiquity to the end of the Baroque era, with famous works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Durer and El Greco.
